Charitable Remainder Trusts

A charitable remainder trust is an individually managed trust that can be tailored to
meet the needs of you and your loved ones. It can be a particularly advantageous way
to use appreciated property or securities to provide a dependable lifelong income stream.
A charitable remainder trust pays an annual income to you and/or your designated beneficiary
for your lifetime(s), or for a term or years. As the donor, you receive an immediate income
tax deduction and avoid capital gains tax. At the death of the beneficiaries the trust principal
is used by the MPTV Friends for the purposes you designate.

Charitable remainder unitrust
When you create a charitable remainder unitrust you agree upon a percentage you will receive. Each year the trust principal is revalued and your income will be that percentage of the revalued principal.

Charitable remainder annuity trust
When you create a charitable remainder annuity trust you agree upon a fixed rate of return that does not change from year to year.

Advantages of charitable remainder trusts:

  • Both types of charitable remainder trusts offer a charitable tax deduction for a portion of the gift when the trust is created.

  • When using highly appreciated securities to fund a charitable remainder trust you may avoid capital gain tax.

  • Your income may be favorably taxed.

  • You may receive federal estate tax savings.
